ALL YEAR ROUND
Full Moon Swims
The enchanting Full Moon Swims at Portishead Open Air Pool have become a magical tradition, drawing night swimmers from across the Bristol region.
As dusk settles and the moon rises over the Severn Estuary, the historic Art Deco lido transforms into a mystical setting, with the heated waters illuminated by underwater lights creating a mesmerizing glow.
Swimmers gather on these special evenings to experience the unique sensation of gliding through warm waters under the moonlit sky, often accompanied by floating candles and gentle music that adds to the ethereal atmosphere.
These events, which regularly sell out within hours of release, offer a rare opportunity to swim in the dark while being safely supervised by the pool's dedicated team.
Portishead Popsicle
The Popsicle is a cold water swimming gala where the emphasis is on putting the fun in fundraising. It happens every December before we heat the pool for Christmas. All profits from the event will help to support this community run open air pool, and we actively welcome swimmers who want to take on this challenge to raise funds for causes close to their own hearts. Spectators and volunteers are more than welcome to enjoy the fun too.
If you fancy a festive swimming challenge, a bit of friendly competition and a good excuse to soak in a hot tub, drink mulled wine and eat mince-pies then this is the event for you. In the past water temperatures for Portishead Popsicle have been as low as four degrees celsius - who knows what the weather will bring? Although it's a safe bet that it won't bring us warm!

Outdoor Cinema
During the summer months, Portishead Open Air Pool transforms into one of the region's most unique cinema venues, where moviegoers can experience films under the stars in a stunning Art Deco setting.
The pool area becomes an atmospheric outdoor theater, with the iconic white-washed walls serving as a natural backdrop for the large screen.
Attendees settle into deck chairs and blankets on the poolside terrace, enjoying everything from classic films to recent releases while the sunset casts a golden glow over the water.
The events combine cinema with the pool's celebrated refreshment kiosk offerings, serving hot drinks, popcorn, and treats to create a perfect evening out.
These screenings have become a highlight of Portishead's summer calendar, often selling out quickly as locals and visitors alike are drawn to the novel experience of watching films in such a historic and atmospheric setting.
The gentle lapping of the pool water adds a unique soundtrack to the experience, making these cinema nights a distinctive blend of Portishead Lido's aquatic heritage and cultural entertainment.
Triathlons
The historic Portishead Open Air Pool has become a vibrant hub for triathlon training and events through its successful partnership with PACTri (Portishead and Clevedon Triathlon Club). Despite the pool's naturally chilly temperatures during winter months, dedicated triathletes can be seen braving the waters year-round, with PACTri organising events that transition from the grade II listed lido to the scenic coastal path.
These events have grown increasingly popular among both seasoned triathletes and newcomers to the sport, particularly during summer months when the heated waters and Art Deco surroundings provide a stunning backdrop for competitors. To join them check out their website https://www.pac-tri.com/.
The collaboration has helped revitalise the lido while establishing Portishead as a key training ground for the region's growing triathlon community.
